Timing is everything. In 2010 we launched a product called Virtual Interviewer. It was very similar to HireVue where interviewees respond to specific questions in a Skype style interview. At the time we thought that it was an excellent idea and with some strong interest from our clients we launched the product.
As we know timing is everything in the market. Whilst we had some success initially the overall uptake of the product didn't kick off as we had hoped. Ultimately, the wider market wasn't ready for such a product and the idea of removing face to face contact was too ingrained into HR and overall views on interviewing.
Fast forward over 6 years later and the uptake on organisations accepting of the idea is rapidly snowballing - particularly in the US.
Is New Zealand ready to embrace video interviews, or will the face to face barrier be too big to overcome?
With a video interview, human resources staff members only have to review the answers, and can do so on their own schedule, without having to travel for on-campus recruiting. Using HireVue, Hilton got its hiring cycle down to 4.5 days, almost 20 days shorter than the average interview process. All of this saves companies money. Cigna has cut travel expenses for recruiters from US$1m year, in some cases, to under US$100,000.
