Today I interviewed a candidate over Skype who was wearing Mickey Mouse pyjama pants.

To be fair, it was 11pm where he was and he had made an effort by putting on a business shirt, but I thought it might be timely to write a post about getting Skype interviews right - especially as they often lead you to that dream job abroad.  Remember you never get a second chance to make a first impression!

Firstly, your image is important. Just like turning up to a face-to-face interview, you need to dress to impress.  Well, at least the top half anyway! Just make sure that if you do decide to wear your Disney PJs that the interviewer can't see them!

Secondly, make sure you're not reading off your screen or notes. I interviewed a candidate once who obviously had two screens - one for Skype and one for notes.  She spent the whole time looking at the other screen and I only saw half of her face which is like interviewing someone who is constantly looking out the window - not cool!

Eye contact is also vital, just like a face-to-face interview, so make sure you are engaging with your interviewer and not another screen.

Think about your posture. Don't bring your feet up underneath you and, for goodness' sake, don't put your feet on the chair and cuddle your knee. Yes, I've seen this before too!

Finally, check your surroundings. There is nothing worse than trying to interview someone who has a semi-naked photo of themselves with their partner on the wall behind them...
