Let’s be honest, recruitment and recession don’t really go hand-in-hand. We have seen a steady decline in job orders since NZ went into lockdown, with many companies placing recruitment activities on hold while they assess the current situation, but not all companies are letting COVID-19 get in the way of hiring good staff!
In fact, we have just made our first, fully virtual placement!
This takes courage from both the candidate and the client, but just proves that, with a little bit of flexibility and doing things outside the norm, that recruitment can still happen!
Our candidate had just been made redundant from her first role in NZ. Thinking that there were no jobs available during lockdown, she decided to use the lockdown period to attend courses and upskill and planned to start her employment hunt once Level 4 had ended. At the same time, one of our Talent Consultants was looking for a Test Analyst and got in touch. The candidate appeared to be a good match for the client and an online test was emailed out to be completed. From that followed a meeting with the Test Manager via Microsoft Teams, and then another meeting with the Development Manager also via Microsoft Teams.
Success! A verbal offer was made, and a contract emailed out later that same day.
Our candidate has never seen the office she will be working in but was impressed by the interview process and is looking forward to starting work on 28 April. If the lockdown is extended, she will be sent a laptop so she can begin her employment at home. Our client has not met their new hire in the flesh, but were impressed by her flexible attitude and willingness to step outside her comfort zone and accept a job working in an office she’d never seen, and offered her more than her original salary expectation!
So there you have it, folks! Good things can happen!
The world has changed so quickly over these past few weeks that we’ve all had to adjust. Shopping at the supermarket is not the same as it used to be. Visiting friends and family members is not the same as it used to be. Travel is not the same as it used to be, and recruitment too, is not the same as it used to be.
However, if companies, and candidates, are willing to take a leap of faith, then I can assure you, that recruitment can, and will, still happen.
